Miley Cyrus had a feeling 2024 was going to be her year, and she was absolutely right, as she landed a Grammy.
The Flowers singer finally snagged her first-ever Grammy at the 2024 ceremony and then doubled it with a second one the same night. But here’s the wild part: Miley Cyrus says she knew she was going to win a Grammy before her name was even read out loud, and it had everything to do with a certain pop diva on stage.
During her June 4 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Miley opened up about that unforgettable moment. She said the second she saw Mariah Carey walk on stage to present the award, it hit her. “Once I saw Mariah Carey, I knew I was going to win,” Miley shared. “I had this whole idea in my mind of the butterfly and that metamorphosis. And she is the butterfly. Her album Butterfly has been such a North Star for me. So when I saw her, I kind of knew I was going to win. It was an MC-to-MC moment, I had to get it.”
And she did. Miley Cyrus won Best Pop Solo Performance for Flowers and then later scooped up Record of the Year for the same hit. It was a milestone moment for the Something Beautiful artist, who’s been nominated before but had never actually taken home a Grammy until now. She said that meeting Mariah Carey was just as special as the award itself: “Even if I didn’t get the trophy… I mean, I love the trophy. But it was really about meeting her. I was so excited.”
But the road to that stage almost didn’t happen. Miley casually dropped a bombshell about nearly missing the entire ceremony. “I didn’t even know if I was going to make it to the Grammys,” she told Fallon. “I actually got stuck in the rain. I got stuck in traffic. I almost didn’t even make it to receive it.” She barely made it in time to accept the award from Mariah, which honestly makes the story even more iconic.
In a separate interview on The Zane Lowe Show in May 2025, Miley got a little deeper about the emotional weight of finally winning. “I think somewhere inside of me, I needed maybe to hold a trophy and just feel for a moment that I have something that I can hold in my hands that feels like a true achievement,” she said. While it was never her main goal, it turned out to be something healing for her after all.
Still, Miley made it clear that awards were never her endgame. Speaking to Fallon, she said, “The reason I love that I never got a Grammy before was because it was never my compass. That wasn’t what I was after because I didn’t really expect it. That’s why the show had so much life, and I was genuinely surprised when I got my award.” It was all the more satisfying because it came naturally and unexpectedly.
The 2024 Grammys weren’t just about the win either, Miley delivered a powerful performance of Flowers on stage that night, proving once again why the track had such a massive global impact. And just a year later, she returned to the Grammys in 2025 with a bold new look and another trophy to her name. This time, she picked up Best Country Duo/Group Performance for II Most Wanted, her collab with Beyoncé.
While talking to Fallon about her current album, Something Beautiful, Miley also took a moment to laugh about the promo strategy for her last project, Endless Summer Vacation. “I just cleverly titled my last album Endless Summer Vacation so then I could be on vacation, and it would look like that was a part of my aesthetic,” she joked. “All I had to do was take pictures of me in a bathing suit and be like ‘ESV,’ and that was the promo.”
Fans were quick to call her out at the time for not promoting the album more traditionally, but Miley said it was because she was already knee-deep in creating new music. “All my fans were like, ‘You’re not promoting this album.’ And I’m like, ‘I’m making the next one, people. You’re ruining the illusion, I got it’!”
From getting stuck in traffic to manifesting a win thanks to Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus’ Grammy journey was chaotic, heartfelt, and very on brand. And if this is what the Something Beautiful era looks like, she’s just getting started.
