Electro-pop duo neontown share their brand new summer anthem, ‘June’, available now on all streaming platforms.
Citing The Chainsmokers, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Zedd and Marshmello as their biggest musical influences, neontown’s distinctive sound is influenced by late 2000s pop music, mixed with elements of contemporary electro-pop, dance and EDM.
We caught up with the duo to learn more about their influences, moving to the UK, ‘June’ music video and more.
Aditya – Hey there! Thanks for taking time out for this interview! How has the past year been for you?
Neontown – Hello! Thank you for your time! This past year has been really interesting for us. We finally had the chance to start working together on music and create this project “neontown”. It has been very creative and productive for us.
Aditya – You both have diverse influences, from Singer-Songwriters to EDM Producers, could you share more information on it?
Neontown – Yes. We are big fans of music in general and our main influences are stuff we were listening to while growing up. We like to listen to different genres and styles and I think this comes across when you listen to our music. We like to take different elements from different genres and mix them all together in our own way.
Aditya – Could you share the idea and direction behind the ‘June’ music video?
Neontown – We wrote this song during lockdown last year, while we were binge-watching “the OC”. That is one our all time favourite series. And while writing the song we kind of had this “OC” vibes in mind that helped us have a vision for the music video if the song was ever going to be released as a single. So when we decided to release it I really wanted to have a bright orange sunset, a long pier and beaches in the music video. And obviously a nice story to tell which is actually also the concept of the song.
Aditya – From Italy to the epicenter the dance music culture, United Kingdom. How did that happen?
Neontown – We moved to the UK for uni in 2012. We were only supposed to stay one year but we ended up staying longer and… nearly 10 years have passed!
Aditya – The title of the track goes hand-in-glows with the vibe, could you share more info on the ideation and process of the song?
Neontown – I think that lockdown gave us the chance to do a lot of thinking and reflection about our lives and about these past years. It really helped us put things into perspective. We were just reminiscing about stuff from the past one day and we started writing it down. Then we just added a really cool summer sound to it because of the title (and because it was actually summer when we wrote it!)
Aditya – Self-love, self-awareness, and acceptance. The pillars of Mental Health, Could shed some more light on it?
Neontown – We think that in a world where there is so much pressure to look in a certain way or act in a certain way, it is very important to remind ourselves that we are all unique and that is what makes us beautiful. We really want this message to come across with our music and we want to make sure that what we say is relatable to as many people as possible. When we were growing up music helped us go through so much stuff and we hope our music will do the same to many people.
Aditya – Do you think the Vinyls will do a comeback?
Neontown – We definitely think they kinda made a comeback already? Especially in the last couple of years it looks like people are really into collecting Vinyls (old and new).
Aditya – ‘Neontown’, what does that mean to you?
Neontown – When we decided to call our duo “neontown”, we wanted to create a place where people could go to as a safe place, shine all their lights and colors, a place to get lost into music and feel great.
Aditya – What would be your Desert Island Disc?
Neontown – That is a hard question! Me (Jac), can I take Spotify? or no music at all… I’ll end up hating the disc from listening over and over to it all the time. I (Aure) would bring Britney Spears’ Greatest Hits.
Aditya – Lastly, What do you have in store for the last quarter of the year?
Neontown – We are planning to release an EP this fall and hopefully starting to play some live gigs! We can’t wait!
