Fake News is much more than an eerie, atmospheric song with a beat that transports you to an ethereal dance floor in your mind. It is the elusive Di’s response to the times in which we’re living.
The accompanying music video riffs on these themes with a raw, simple aesthetic which sees Di delivering her message straight to camera surrounded, quite appropriately, by a wall of fake news.
Never afraid of looking at the darker side of life, her last single ‘Warped Desires’ wrapped an irrepressible beat around lyrics that spoke to the darker side of love. Now, when the world can’t seem to tell the difference between what’s real and what’s fake and nothing is what it seems; Di weighs in with Fake News. Interestingly, Di was actually inspired to write ‘Fake News’ as the result of a discussion she had about Trump over afternoon tea in New York with close friends Stormzy and Eminem, two other artists unafraid of being political. Di once spotted Trump in the City with Ivanka but wasn’t sure if she was real or a clone. Trump was trying to show off his ‘real’ renoir painting but whether it’s real or not remains unknown. On the subject of Trump Di doesn’t hold back; saying that his Presidency feels like a dystopian performance art project that twists reality and entertainment into one horrifyingly compelling spectacle.
What’s clear is that Di has taken her political and personal passions and poured them into her most personal, thoughtful and provocative song yet.
