Gary Neville Rips into Manchester United, Calls for 10-Player Summer Clearout

Gary Neville has gone in hard on Manchester United, urging the club to get rid of 10 players this summer after what he says is their worst-ever Premier League season.

The former captain didn’t sugarcoat anything, warning that unless drastic changes are made, things will continue to spiral under new boss Ruben Amorim.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Neville said, “You’re talking about eight to 10 players have to go.” He broke it down further-three or four will leave when their contracts expire, but United still need to force out another five or six. And it won’t be easy. “They’re going to have to pay to get them out,” he said bluntly.

One of the key players mentioned was Marcus Rashford. According to Neville, even if United manage to offload him, they’ll likely still be paying a chunk of his massive wages. “Rashford’s wages now will be paid half by Manchester United. That’s £180,000-a-week, £8 million-a-year being paid by United.” It’s a tough pill to swallow for a player once seen as the future of the club.

Neville also turned his attention to the club’s shocking record in the transfer market. He didn’t hold back: “It’s been a graveyard for every player that’s joined that club in the last 10 years apart from Bruno.” And he’s not wrong-from Angel Di Maria to Bastian Schweinsteiger, countless big names have arrived with hype and left with disappointment.

The only exception in Neville’s eyes is Bruno Fernandes, who he called “amazing” and a “standout.” But one player isn’t enough to carry the weight of a failing system. Neville fears this trend of poor recruitment could continue into another disastrous summer window.

With the Europa League final against Tottenham looming, Neville isn’t optimistic. “United do have a couple of players, the likes of Casemiro and Bruno, they have something in them that will step up for a one-off game. But if the players play like they should, Tottenham should win that game.”

That’s a brutal but honest take. Spurs have been the better side all season, and United’s inconsistency has made them unpredictable and fragile in big moments.

The bigger picture here is United’s inability to build a functioning squad. The club has spent over a billion pounds in the past decade and still looks like a team without an identity. Neville’s call for a Manchester United squad overhaul isn’t just about a few bad games-it’s about breaking a decade-long cycle of failure.

Whether the board, Amorim, or the new ownership group actually listens remains to be seen. But as it stands, the summer clearout Neville is demanding looks less like an option and more like a necessity.
