The sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 officially has a new name, Cyberpunk 2.
What was previously known as Project Orion has now been rebranded by CD Projekt Red, although that isn’t the final title. According to CDPR’s senior PR manager Ola Sondej, Cyberpunk 2 is more of a working name for what is simply “another game in the Cyberpunk universe.”
While it’s not much of a reveal, this change marks a bigger milestone: the game has now moved from the “conceptual phase” into pre-production. That means CD Projekt Red is officially building the foundations of its next big RPG. Considering the studio’s ambition and how much they’ve already learned from Cyberpunk 2077, this next chapter could be a massive step forward
.
Details are still scarce, but CD Projekt Red is teasing this game as the “next big game” in the Cyberpunk universe. That alone sets the tone for something on the scale of or even beyond Cyberpunk 2077. If you thought Night City was massive and dense, just wait.
Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the original Cyberpunk tabletop universe, also gave fans something to chew on. Speaking to Polish outlet TVGRY, he hinted that the sequel will include a second city alongside Night City. He said it’s a location that gives off “Chicago gone wrong” vibes. So yeah, if Night City wasn’t gritty and wild enough for you, CDPR might be about to unleash a whole new kind of chaos.
Pondsmith added that he had conversations with one of the environment designers, saying the new setting has a feel that’s very different from the neon-noir, Blade Runner-inspired aesthetic of Night City. That’s a strong hint we’re looking at a shift in tone and design, maybe something a little more raw and grounded.
All signs point to Cyberpunk 2 being a true sequel and not just a spinoff. It’s likely to build directly on the lore, characters, and world established in Cyberpunk 2077, while expanding the universe both geographically and thematically. The idea of exploring a second city adds a fresh layer of depth to the world.
No release window has been announced, and since the project is still in pre-production, it’s safe to say we’re years away from launch. But for fans of the Cyberpunk world, knowing that CD Projekt Red is pushing forward with a major new entry is exciting enough.
Between the improved dev cycle, the lessons learned from Cyberpunk 2077’s rocky launch, and the ambition to create a multi-city experience, Cyberpunk 2 could be the redemption arc the franchise deserves. Stay tuned, chooms. This is just the beginning.
