Our artist of the month is one of the biggest legends of the industry, a real veteran. A complete performer, him and his ‘friends’ have ruled many a festival stage and headlined countless nights in the breathtakingly beautiful Ibiza party island. You guessed it right, it’s the one and only Carl Cox.
Beginning his career in the mid 80s, The Eclipse, Edge, Shelly’s, Sterns Nightclub, Heaven, Sir Henry’s in Cork, Ireland and Angels and The Haçienda were some of the clubs that he frequented. He heads two record labels now, namely Intec records and 23rd Century Records.
Carl usually headlines big festivals like Ultra with his own concept stage, ‘Carl Cox and friends’. In the film, “Can U Feel It?”, a documentary about Ultra as a music festival, Carl explains that the concept of Carl Cox & Friends came about as a result of not only wanting to play longer sets at festivals, but to also give festival goers an experience within the festival, as Carl has far more creative control over his own stage.
The 2014 edition of Ultra was the 10th anniversary of the Carl Cox and Friends stage at the world famous music festival. During that edition of Ultra he played alongside Marco Bailey,UMEK and Pete Tong on his stage. Another interesting fact is that Carl flew over from Sydney to Hawaii to play the 1999-2000 Millennium New Years Eve twice by crossing over the date line. He’s been a BBC Radio One resident, has been dishing out mixes from Club Space in Miami and has had his own show on Kiss FM.
He’s been voted number one on the DJ Mag Rave rankings and DJ rankings in the 90s, and continues to be ranked consistently in the Top 5 even today in other polls. He’s also had four studio albums and one mixtape released.
His 1991 release ‘I want you’ which happens to be one his earliest tracks continues to be considered his best work by many of his fans and peers. Other tracks that are fondly remembered by all his fans are ‘Family Guy’, ‘The Player’, ‘Anthemia’, ‘That’s The Bass’, and ‘Give Me Your Love’.
Sander van Doorn, Moby, Ramirez, Tony Moran, DJ SS, Slab, Steve Mason, AWeX are some of the artists that he has remixed. He also has a number of mix compilations to his name, the most recent ones being Ultimate Carl Cox and Global Underground 38.
