Ask any music fan about acts who have left a legacy in the UK dance music and Freestylers is a name that’s likely to crop up.
A truly British institution, Freestylers have stuck to their musical guns for nearly two decades, creating a sound that’s seen them garner worldwide recognition and a legion of dedicated fans.
Now, with the current generation of young UK producers looking for inspiration from the sounds of the ‘90s, and breakbeat in particular, Freestylers are not only a legendary act, but also as relevant and important to British music as they ever were.
Their new EP leads with the track Rude Bwoy, a collaboration with Jamaican dancehall outfit RDX whose recent work includes a huge single with Major Lazer and a forthcoming team up with Skrillex & Yogi. Bringing back the original Freestylers rib-rattling, floor-shaking, party-starting style this is straight up dancefloor fun that’s sure to have booties bouncing and rude bwoys throwing up gun fingers in the dance.
Expanding on the throwback nature of this killer beat are remixes from fellow breakbeat aficionado Deekline, who takes things into bouncy garage territory, reflecting his recent single Take It Back which was rinsed by MistaJam on BBC 1Xtra, and drum & bass legend Aphrodite who offers up a classic Urban Takeover vibe.
The EP also includes Ready For The Clash, an off-kilter breakbeat/rave hybrid that’s built for more intense moments thanks to its purpose-built bottomless bass and paranoid warehouse synths.
The Rude Bwoy EP impact date on 11th September coincides with Freestylers’ headline appearance at Field Trip Festival in Wiltshire which sees them perform alongside Redlight, GotSome, Taiki Nulight, DJ Marky, Benny Page, Dr Meaker and Orbital’s Phil Hartnoll.
