Did Trump and Musk Just Declare War on Each Other?

Donald Trump and Elon Musk have officially gone from awkward political allies to bitter enemies, and the public feud that just erupted between them is way uglier than anyone expected.

What started as a disagreement over a spending bill turned into a full-on social media brawl filled with Epstein allegations, personal insults, and billion-dollar threats. The two most unpredictable power players in America finally snapped, and it’s not looking like they’ll be kissing and making up anytime soon.

It all blew up during Trump’s Oval Office meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Around ten minutes into their chat, Trump was asked about Musk’s criticism of his latest legislative agenda. At first, Trump played it cool: “He hasn’t said anything about me that’s bad,” he told reporters. “I’d rather have him criticize me than the bill.” That aged badly, within hours, Musk had gone scorched-earth.

Using his platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk live-posted a series of furious responses, escalating the beef from policy-level disagreement to full-blown character assassination. He first threw Trump’s fiscal record under the bus, pointing out how Trump used to slam national debt and now supports a bill Musk calls bloated with “disgusting pork.” Musk even dug up old Trump tweets and mocked him: “Where is the man who wrote these words? Was he replaced by a body double!?”

And that wasn’t even the low blow. Musk went nuclear when he posted, “Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.” He added another ominous message: “Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.” No evidence, no receipts, just a massive, reputation-destroying accusation. While Trump has been publicly linked to Epstein before (they’ve been photographed together), Musk’s claim suggests a cover-up from the Trump camp and was instantly labeled “an unfortunate episode” by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The whole Epstein angle sent the internet into meltdown, but Musk was just getting started. He went after Trump’s ultimate sore spot, his claim to fame as a winner. Trump said he didn’t need Elon’s help to win Pennsylvania, but Musk clapped back with, “Without me, Trump would have lost the election. Dems would control the House, and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate.” Then he followed up with the sharpest jab of all: “Such ingratitude.” If there’s one thing Trump can’t tolerate, it’s someone else taking credit for his win.

Trump fired back, accusing Musk of having a financial motive. According to him, Elon only started complaining about the bill once it cut electric vehicle (EV) mandates that would’ve benefitted Tesla. “Elon’s upset because we took the [electric vehicle] mandate,” Trump said, adding that Musk had “no problem” with the bill until he realized the EV perks were gone. On Truth Social, Trump went even further, claiming Musk “went CRAZY” once he saw those subsidies disappear.

Musk wasn’t letting that narrative fly. He told lawmakers to keep the EV subsidy cuts and just scrap the “MOUNTAIN of DISGUSTING PORK.” He even shared an old clip where Trump says, on camera, that Musk “never asked me for a thing,” calling out Trump’s flip-flop on what the feud was really about. Musk also promoted a post by GOP Rep. Thomas Massie, who implied Trump was driven by greed. “Some politicians get into politics to enrich themselves,” Massie wrote. Musk reposted it without hesitation.

Things got even more intense when Trump floated cutting Musk’s federal contracts. He told lawmakers the best way to save money would be to “terminate Elon’s governmental subsidies and contracts.” That’s a big deal, considering Musk’s SpaceX holds major government deals for space missions and satellite launches. Elon dared him to try, sharing the post and writing, “Go ahead, make my day.” He even threatened to “begin decommissioning” a key spacecraft. That’s not just petty, it’s high-stakes.

To top it all off, Musk leaned all the way into the power play. He responded to a post about lawmakers having to choose sides by pointing out the obvious: Trump has a few years left in office, but Musk has decades of influence ahead. “Trump has 3.5 years left as president, but I will be around for 40+ years,” Musk warned. That wasn’t a flex, it was a shot across the bow. Basically, he’s saying, Pick the wrong side now, and I won’t forget it.

What happens next? Who knows? Trump has a history of reconciling with enemies when it suits him. But Elon Musk isn’t just another political figure, he’s a billionaire with unlimited reach and no filter. The Trump-Musk alliance was shaky from the start, and now it’s completely shattered. Whether this ends with backdoor deals or more digital nukes, one thing’s clear: this is just the beginning of one of the nastiest, most high-profile feuds in modern American politics.
