John Cleese Tried LSD at 65 and Guess What Happened?

John Cleese isn’t exactly who you’d expect to dabble in psychedelics, but at 65, he decided it was time to see what the fuss was about. The 85-year-old comedy icon revealed he tried LSD back in 2005, despite never having much interest in drugs when he was younger. Talking to The Times’ Weekend magazine, John said he was always “surprisingly ignorant” about drugs and just wanted to experience LSD under safe conditions.

“I just wanted to know what it was all about,” John said, explaining that he took it under the supervision of a world expert. Even though he got scared for about ten minutes, the expert and his wife helped him through it. In the end, he found it completely mind-blowing. “It was extraordinary to realize how fertile the human mind is,” he added, sounding genuinely amazed by the whole trip.

Even though he took LSD that one time, John has never been a big fan of substances that mess with reality. He’s not much of a drinker either. “It wasn’t quite losing control… I didn’t really want to lose my grasp of reality,” he admitted.

Apart from opening up about his psychedelic adventure, John also talked about his personal life and how it’s changed over the years, especially after some tough divorces. His third wife, Alyce Eichelberger, got a huge £15 million divorce settlement in 2008. John, who was also married to Connie Booth and Barbara Trentham before, said that divorce hit him hard , they had to sell off several properties.

Now, John doesn’t technically own a home at all. He recently transferred ownership of his Chelsea flat to his fourth wife, Jennifer Wade, to make her feel more secure. “I don’t have a house, I don’t have a car,” he said, but he’s totally fine with it because it gives Jennifer peace of mind. “The greatest, saddest thing about our world is how many women feel unsafe,” he reflected. Giving Jennifer the flat took away an anxiety she didn’t even fully realize she had.

Even without a house or a car in his name, John Cleese seems perfectly content , and a little wiser after everything he’s been through, both in his mind and in real life.
