Scheana Shay is finally speaking up about the rough six months she’s had, and it all started when she agreed to do The Masked Singer.
The Vanderpump Rules star opened up on her podcast Scheananigans, revealing that saying yes to the reality singing show was a massive regret and sent her spiraling into a depression she couldn’t shake.
“I have really just been feeling depressed the last six months,” she said. “It was something that I kept trying to just mask and say, ‘No, I’m fine. It’ll go away.’” But it didn’t. And Scheana says the low point started the moment she got the offer to appear on The Masked Singer. Her gut reaction was to say no. “Hard pass, absolutely not,” she recalled. “I didn’t care how much money they were paying me. I was not going on national television just to get made fun of.”
Still, she did it, suited up as “Bat,” performed Sabrina Carpenter’s viral hit Espresso, and got sent home right away. That’s when it all crashed. “I totally had a meltdown in my trailer,” Scheana confessed. “This is why I didn’t want to do this show. I’m not good enough. I get sent home first. Now everyone’s going to make fun of me.”
Things got darker when she tried adjusting her meds on her own. “I just was like, ‘Maybe I up my meds a little bit.’ But then I started grinding my teeth a lot at night.” She tried scaling back, but it wasn’t enough. “As if that’s enough Zoloft for anyone. It’s not. I’ve learned that. I’m now at 75 mg and considering 100 mg.”
Just as she started trying to get help, meeting with her psychiatrist and therapist, the holidays hit, followed by the LA wildfires tearing through her hometown in January. “It was just a few really heavy months emotionally,” she said. “Then we’re in March and the show’s airing.”
Watching herself on TV, reliving the experience, made things even worse. “Now I really need to focus on what’s been brewing and what’s going on,” she said. “Because I felt like getting sent home first was part of it – but it couldn’t be all of it.”
It’s clear Scheana’s been through it. And while she’s usually known for her bubbly on-screen presence, this time she’s showing fans what’s really been going on behind the scenes, and it’s raw, real, and painfully relatable.
