Having captivated Asian audiences this summer at We The Fest Jakarta and Sunny Side Up Bali, singer, songwriter and producer George Maple continues to command 2016, making her mark on the year in her trademark captivating, slowburn way.

Recently, she unveiled her new single, ‘Lover’ which was also accompanied with a sumptuous video, featuring male supermodel Jordan Barrett. We caught up with George and spoke to her about this song and the video, plus various other topics including the dance music culture in LA and making the transition from behind the scenes, to being a singer, songwriter and producer.

Valarie – Welcome, George Maple. It’s a pleasure to have you here.

George – Thank you for having me

Valarie – You recently moved to Los Angeles. Is there something about the dance music culture in LA that has caught your eye?

George – I have a great community of people here at the moment. Producers, writers, actors, creatives who I love being around and who inspire me. I think that was the biggest appeal about LA, is that its it’s own eco-system and I have always wanted to be a part of it

Valarie – Coming out from behind the scenes (being a singer, songwriter, producer), how has the transition been for you?

George – I like it. It used to stress me out a little bit, but I’ve come to really enjoy the artist side of the industry. I love the sense of expression that’s involved and I’ve begun to embrace all the more daunting parts of being an artist as exciting challenges to help myself grow as a human and artist. I used to hate being on camera, I used to have a real problem with the idea that I had to expose myself to the world just because I was an artist, then I began to embrace the space as another opportunity to create, to express. The visual side is developing more and more as I continue. I think being behind the scenes is my comfort zone and it will always be. I’m sure one day I’ll retreat to my house in the woods and recluse/ live in my studio.

Valarie – Your recent single “Lover”, out now on your own label and licensed to (Virgin EMI Records). The video for it is brilliant! What was the concept behind the song & video?

George – Thank you so much. The concept was really just capturing the song in a visual form. Im really fascinated by the primitive nature of intimacy and the way it tends to trigger very primal instincts in humans. Love tends to drive us all a little nutty, and it seems to be something we can’t control. I know I’ve personally experienced this many times in my life and I’ve watched the most stable individuals become completely powerless to their own minds in persuit of love. It fascinates me.

Valarie – We heard the news that you are planning to launch an album next year! Could you give us more details on this?

George – I’m working on it! When I know, you’ll know too. :)

Valarie – What does touring look like for the next few months? We hear Asia is on the cards very soon?

George – Yes, that is the plan ;) stay tuned

Valarie – Time for some quick-fire ones! Your top 3 movies?

George – When harry met Sally, The Matrix, Big Hero 6

Valarie – Favourite cuisine?

George – Vegan food

Valarie – Hugh Jackman or Chris Hemsworth? (Wolverine vs Thor! :P)

George – Hugh Jackman as wolverine will do me thanks

Valarie – Your top 3 locations across the globe in terms of dance music culture?

George – Berlin, London, New York, Sydney ( before the lockouts)

Valarie – Your favourite social media platform and why?

George – I like Instagram simply because it’s a way of almost creating a collage of your life, takes me back to being kid again

Valarie – Your top 3 essential tunes?

George – In your arms – Mylo; Little red corvette – Prince; Can’t do without you – Caribou,

Valarie – Thanks so much George Maple for taking time out to talk to us here at T.H.E – Music Essentials. It’s been an absolute pleasure!
