Topic opens up on revamping “Kernkraft 400”, musical influences and more.

Aditya – Hey Topic, Glad to have you for the interview. How was the first half of this year for you?

Topic – It’s been amazing! Especially because this year feels like we’re fully back in doing shows, so it’s just been great! I’m just doing this interview like an hour before going on stage again in Marseille on the beach and that’s so nice because not even a year ago you could only dream of doing something like this and now it’s possible again and it’s awesome.

Aditya – I had the opportunity to listen to “Kernkraft 400 (A Better Day)” before the release, it sounds fresh & nostalgic at the same time. What’s your creative process behind this track?

Topic – I mean it’s just like taking the sample, starting an instrumental track with it, and then meeting with A7S in the studio, freestyling some melodies, putting in lyric ideas, and just going with the flow, without thinking too much.

Aditya – What was the ideation behind the revamp of the legendary ‘Kernkraft 400’ melody?

Topic – It feels like a festival track and that’s why we came up with the idea to call it “A Better Day“ because everything’s opening up right now again and we feel like better days are finally ahead of us again. Now you can enjoy going to festivals, going to clubs, and meeting people again.

Aditya – You’ve amassed billions of streams. How do you feel about that?

Topic – It still feels unreal sometimes because it’s something I would never believe would happen. I was always aiming for a song that would have 100 million streams and that was my goal. And now it’s billions of streams everywhere and that’s just amazing and I am very grateful for that.

Aditya – Who are your influences and why?

Topic – So in the beginning my influences were AVICII, Swedish House Mafia, Martin Garrix and all these artists who made the EDM era and progressive house, because I always liked that their songs were powerful but also a little bit melancholic and melodic. But right now I am actually trying to not be influenced by too many people because if I listen too much to certain artists I am subconsciously going to sound like them.

Aditya – Are there more collaborations in the pipeline with A7S?

Topic – Right now we don’t have any more collabs planned but we’re constantly in the studio, working together. So I definitely think that somethings going to happen there.

Aditya – You have quite a discography, which is your favorite track of yours at the moment and why?

Topic – Picking a favorite track of mine is so tricky because all the songs have a great history behind it and there are great memories in the creation process. It would not be fair for any of the other songs to pick a favorite. I definitely think tracks like “Home” and “Breaking Me” are special to me because they were really like turning points in my career.

Aditya – Do you think vinyls will have a comeback?

Topic – I think vinyls are already having a comeback but I don’t think that it will be a very commercial strain again and that everyone’s going to buy them. I think it’s more for fans or for real music lovers who just like to have a physical product in their hands.

Aditya – Do you believe that crypto currencies and blockchain will be the future?

Topic – Yes, I definitely think so! This will be the future but I am not sure if the right product is there at the moment. If it’s going to be bitcoin or any other crypto currency. I definitely think that the technique is very good.

Aditya – Lastly, would you rather build a recording studio in the mountains or beaches?

Topic – Definitely beaches! I like the mountains and they’re great but I am definitely preferring the beach.
