Miley Cyrus isn’t here to serve polished pop perfection, and honestly, that’s what makes her new ballad, “More to Lose” hit even harder.
Released on May 9, the emotional ballad is the second track from her upcoming visual album, Something Beautiful, and it’s already getting fans deep in their feels. The 32-year-old opened up about the song in a candid Instagram video, revealing that she deliberately kept it raw, recording it in one take to preserve its meaning.
“On a song like ‘More to Lose,’ I try to keep it a singular take,” Miley shared. “I add my harmonies and ad-libs at the end, but it’s really a song that’s more of a story. I never want that to be interrupted or overthought or chasing perfection.” That mindset alone sets this track apart from the usual overproduced fare. She wanted it emotional, not polished. And it shows.
The stripped-back approach is haunting. In a sparkly gown, she performs the track in a clip she posted, delivering the lyrics like a confessional. “I stay when the ecstasy is far away. I pray that it’s coming around again. You say it, but I wish it weren’t true. I knew someday that one would have to choose; I just thought we had more to lose.” That last line, yeah, it’s the kind of gut punch only Miley can deliver.
She actually performed More to Lose live before its official release during a private pre-Met Gala party in NYC last weekend. And because it’s Miley, of course the crowd was filled with familiar faces. She even told the audience, “I have a lot of people that I’ve known and loved for a very long time in this room. Even a couple of exes.” No word on which ones, Liam Hemsworth? Nick Jonas? Cody Simpson?, but the subtle shade and sentiment landed just right.
Something Beautiful drops May 30, and it’s more than just an album. It’s a full-on visual experience. The album will premiere as a film at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival in June and features 13 tracks total. Fans have already gotten a taste with Prelude and End of the World, and if those plus More to Lose are anything to go by, this era is going to be wild, in the best, most vulnerable way.
Miley’s camp says this album is “a one-of-a-kind pop opera,” blending music, fashion, and emotion. In the visuals for the title track, Something Beautiful, she rocked a custom Casey Cadwallader design for Mugler, pushing the boundaries of style just like she’s pushing the sound of pop. Her message? She’s not chasing perfection. She’s chasing truth.
