Intel has confirmed that it will be carrying out layoff in the second quarter 2025, impacting a portion of its workforce.
In an email to employees, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan revealed the company’s plans to simplify its operations by eliminating “unnecessary bureaucracy,” which will inevitably lead to job cuts. While Tan did not specify exactly how many people would be affected, the tech giant is reportedly looking to reduce its workforce by as much as 20 percent, according to recent reports.
The decision comes as part of Intel’s efforts to streamline its operations and refocus on engineering. Tan explained that many of the company’s teams are “eight or more layers deep,” creating excessive red tape that hampers productivity. In his message to staff, he emphasized the need to remove this complexity in order to move faster and more effectively. “I’m a big believer in the philosophy that the best leaders get the most done with the fewest people,” Tan wrote, expressing his belief that cutting through this organizational complexity would empower top talent to make quicker, more decisive moves.
While the specific number of layoffs remains unclear, Tan acknowledged the difficulty of the situation. “There is no way around the fact that these critical changes will reduce the size of our workforce,” he said. “We need to make some very hard decisions to put our company on a solid footing for the future.” This restructuring effort is expected to begin in Q2 2025, with layoffs rolling out over several months as Intel reshapes its teams.
In addition to the workforce reductions, Tan also revealed that Intel’s current hybrid working policy, which requires employees to spend three days a week in the office, will be adjusted. By September 2025, the policy will shift to a mandatory four days in-office, reflecting the company’s growing focus on physical collaboration and redefined operations.
Intel’s move is part of a larger trend in the tech industry, where many companies are reevaluating their workforces and structures to stay competitive. While the announcement has left many employees uncertain about the future, the company’s efforts to reduce bureaucracy and focus on engineering could help it stay agile in the fast-evolving tech space.
